The many renowned restaurants in Kyoto have long been under the spotlight of various restaurant review platforms. Instead of another ranking list, we are here introducing to you the restaurants in the streets and alleys around our guesthouse, which are our personal favourites and are loved by the locals, where you can experience the dining culture and customs here.
Please note that every restaurant has different closing days and may change their opening hours temporarily. A few of them provide English menus and simple English service.
Average spending per person: breakfast 400-600 yen, lunch 800-1500 yen, dinner 1000-3000 yen.
The best recommendation we can give for Japanese cuisine, also a favourite among the locals. Serving home cooked dishes for generations since 1950. Hope you would stop by for its delicate dishes!

A restaurant inside a parking lot. You can enjoy Japanese cuisine here for lunch and dinner, and also alcohol during dinner. Recommended dish: Simmered Flounder (カレイの煮付け) for the tender flounder and the rich soup. This signature dish usually sold out soon, so it is better to go early to enjoy the dish.

The coffee here is brewed by vacuum coffee pot. A nice place for breakfast to start your day.

The very favourite Ramen restaurants among the locals. Recommended dish: Seafood Dipping Ramen, the creamy dipping broth wraps on the noodles and creates a great flavour.

「Menbakaichidai Fire Ramen」Map：260m

A favourite among foreign visitors for its unique dining experience. Fire goes high up to the ceiling when the boiling oil is poured onto the spring onion. The staff would record the blazing moment for you on your phone.

Behind the entrance curtain is a long long bar table and walls filled by names of dishes offered here. Serves a variety of dishes with a good price, it is a good place for experiencing the local atmosphere. Most seatings are bar stools.

Mainly serves charcoal grills and deep-fried items. A variety of Chazuke (tea over rice) is also available. Recommended dish: Roasted Rice Ball Ochazuke, a dish that would warm you up.

Serves many seafood dishes. A place where you can try out different Japanese small hot pots. Nice food at a modest price. A lot of seats available.

A restaurant which meat lovers would not want to miss out on. Serves mainly beef steaks and also some pork, chicken and seafood items. There are too many delicious dishes to put them all here, among them our favourites are Japanese black beef (a breed of Japanese beef cattle), roasted meat sushi, roasted meat ochatsuke (tea over rice), steamed chicken, sashimi salad and raw duck meat salad. Our favorite dessert is chocolate banana crepe.

To be sure, it is best for one to try out local cuisine when traveling. Despite that this curry bar is worth visiting for people who like curry. Here in one place you can find Indian curry, Pakistanian curry and Sri Lankan curry and more. The rich taste of all the different spices is unforgettable.

Opened since 1968, the place itself feels nostalgic. And it is the right place for tasting the traditional Japanese curry, which is sweet, aromatic and comes in a variety.

「Thai Curry Restaurant Siam」Map：1100m
Three times included in the “Thai Select” of the Thai Trade Centre Japan, and a winner of “The Pride of Thailand Certificate of Excellence” in year 2009. The Thai restaurant is of unique character due to its formula of self-made spices and its use of local and Thai rice combined. It also uses the healthy rice bran oil.

A unique restaurant of fusion curry which is keen on its choice of ingredients, its menu changes according to seasons. Just as its name which means “forest” in Japanese, the place is decorated with a lot of plants in and out, that one may mistake it for a florist shop at a glance. It is also selling a bunch of special, cute handicrafts, and sometimes holds craftwork exhibitions.
